Influence of ion implantation on structure and properties of semi-conducting materials, instrumental steels and alloys, nanocomposite coatings, including multielement ones, titanium alloys with the shape memory effect and super-elasticity are discussed in detail within this book. New data on novel applications of ion implantation for the modification and testing (radiation hardness simulation) of memristive devices, as well as application of ion implantation of group V dopants in the MCT epilayer are presented in this book. Potential use of ion implantation for the synthesis of Ag nanoparticles in a thin Si layer for the development of thin-film solar cells fabrication technology is discussed. The effect of ion implantation on the physical and mechanical properties of the hard alloy plates based on tungsten carbide and a cobalt binder is described. A study of the effects of ion implantation on the phase composition and the structure of materials is presented. The role of defects in the formation of the phase composition of the ion-implanted materials, structural-phase transformations in metals after ion implantation is investigated. This book will be interesting for professionals in the study of solid state physics, nuclear physics, physics of semi-conductors and nanomaterials. It can also be useful for masters and PhD students, as well as for professionals researching the fabrication and investigation of protective materials with enhanced physical-mechanical and tribological properties, good biocompatibility and resistance to irradiation"--

Abstract

This Brief describes the influence of the different organic chelating agents on the topography, physical properties and phases of SPPS-deposited spinel ferrite splats. The author describes how by using the SPPS process, the coating is produced directly from a solution precursor and how all physical and chemical reactions such as evaporation, decomposition, crystallization and coating formation occur in a single step. The author details not only the innovative approach to liquid feeding, but also focuses on its effects on the spinel ferrite system. The results of experimentation as well as detailed explanations of the experiments are included.

Abstract

This book presents data on the optical constants of metal elements (Na, Au, Mg, Hg, Sc, Al, Ti, ß-Sn, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, La, Th, etc.) semimetal elements (graphite, Sb, etc.), metallic compounds (TiN, VC, TiSi 2 , CoSi 2 , etc.) and high-temperature superconducting materials (YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-d , MgB 2 , etc.). A complete set of the optical constants are presented in tabular and graphical forms over the entire photon-energy range. They are: the complex dielectric constant e( E )=e 1 ( E )+ie 2 ( E ), the complex refractive index n *( E )= n ( E )+i k ( E ), the absorption coefficient a( E ) and the

Abstract

This thesis studied the effect of aging of intumescent coatings (ICs) on the reliability of protected steel columns in fire condition and developed a probabilistic approach to assess the service life of ICs applied on steel columns. In the study, Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to obtain the reliability index or failure probability of steel columns protected by ICs subjected to compartment fires.  The effect of aging of intumescent coatings on the failure probability of protected steel columns was investigated by using variable insulation property of intumescent coatings in the simulation. The test data on aging effect on insulation property of intumescent coatings from literature was used. Based on the reliability analysis, a probabilistic approach is given to determine the service life of intumescent coatings for steel columns. In that approach, the failure probability of the protected steel columns is compared with the target probability of the structural fire design. The approach can also be used for probabilistic analysis of steel columns protected by conventional inert fire protection materials.

Abstract

This book covers a broad range of materials science that has been brought to bear on providing solutions to the challenges of developing self-healing and protective coatings for a range of metals. The book has a strong emphasis on characterisation techniques, particularly new techniques that are beginning to be used in the coatings area. It features many contributions written by experts from various industrial sectors which examine the needs of the sectors and the state of the art. The development of self-healing and protective coatings has been an expanding field in recent years and applies a lot of new knowledge gained from other fields as well as other areas of materials science to the development of coatings. It has borrowed from fields such as the food and pharmaceutical industries who have used, polymer techniques, sol-gel science and colloidosome technology for a range encapsulation techniques. It has also borrowed from fields like hydrogen storage such as from the development of hierarchical and other materials based on organic templating as “nanocontainers” for the delivery of inhibitors. In materials science, recent developments in high throughput and other characterisation techniques, such as those available from synchrotrons, are being increasing used for novel characterisation – one only needs to look at the application of these techniques in self healing polymers to gauge wealth of new information that has been gained from these techniques. This work is largely driven by the need to replace environmental pollutants and hazardous chemicals that represent risk to humans such as chromate inhibitors which are still used in some applications.
